Sunday is the 4th annual California Car & Cycle Show at the Ventura Fairgrounds in Ventura California. Stephanie & I will be up there support this event along with Danny D Studios, SANCTIOND, and plenty of the heavy hitters from around Southern California including Albert De Alba’s 2011 Lowrider of the Year ” El Rey”. As we all know Sunday was Mother’s Day here in the United States. It’s a day spent shuttling from one place to another to ensure that our wives, grandmothers, mother’s and mother’s in law are honored. You would not expect a car show on Mother’s Day but Mark and Traffic Car Club had no choice but to pick this day so they would not schedule a show as the same day as another club’s event. Normally, Stephanie & I do not do shows or events on holidays but Sunday we had to make an exception. Mark, Silvia, the Alcala kids and Traffic CC are great/close friends of ours who we always support and they support us. So in between Mother’s Day celebrations we shot over to the show. It was late in the afternoon but there was still a lot of people and a lot of cars!

Event Coverage ~ Crusin’ Califas Opening Reception ~ Oceanside Museum of Art ~ Oceanside California

Saturday evening was the opening reception for the Cruisin’ Califas Art of Lowriding Exhibition at the Oceanside Museum of Art that Stephanie & I are a part of. We made our way into Oceanside Saturday afternoon and were able to shoot the show before the doors opened for the evening.

Before we get to the photos I have to address something that some of those in attendance may have picked up on at the event. A bit of a back story. I had not been feeling myself for about a week but I just chalked it up to the stress of getting ready for two art shows a week apart. I had been complaining to Stephanie that my left eye had been bothering me and my tongue felt weird the day before the show.

As we drove from LA to Oceanside, I could feel a tightening in my face but just kept it moving and tried to ignore it. At the show Stephanie noticed that the left side of my face was not functioning. My mouth was drooping and my left eye was not blinking (which explained the eye irritation). For those of you that do not know, Stephanie is A RN (Registered Nurse) so she immediately went into action and started to assess me. Me being a man, I brushed it all off until she called for back up which happen to be the Oceanside Fire Department who have a station next door to the Museum. They took me into the station and assessed me and confirmed her assessment and advised me that I get to a hospital right away. I had symptoms of Bell’s Palsy but as a precaution they wanted to rule out an oncoming stroke.

Still me being a diehard, I negotiated a few more minutes at the event under the watchful eye of the fireman and Stephanie. I had to get photos of the event and make sure I was able to say hello to everyone I could! I started to notice that people started to notice that I was not functioning correctly which was enough for me to leave to the emergency room. I left without say goodbye and did not get to participate in the artists group shot which I was bummed about.

We ended up at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas and were immediately taken care of by the great Emergency Room staff. The Dr. confirmed that it is Bell’s Palsy. He gave me a regiment of meds and off we went back to LA but not before we stopped back in Oceanside to check in with our friends that knew what was going on. I cannot thank everyone enough for the care and concern especially Stephanie, the Oceanside Fire Department and the staff at Scripps Hospital Encinitas.

I have a doctor’s appointment today to go over a course of treatment. Hopefully this is only a temporary condition but either way, I will still be out there doing what I love to do; photography. Now, on to some photos.

Saturday we were in Oceanside for the opening reception of the Cruisin’ Califas Lowrider Art Exhibit at the Oceanside Museum of Art.

Sunday between Mother’s Day celebrations we went to support our friend Mark from Traffic CC at his show.

Yesterday was the DePalma Art & Kustom Car Show at the LAB in Costa Mesa California. Stephanie & I were invited by Kris from DePalma Clothing Company to be a part of the art show that was being held in conjunction with the car show. For the past few weeks we have been selecting photos, printing and getting them framed and matted. Last week we hung them in the gallery at the event space for yesterday’s event. It was tough to get a shot of the whole wall so I had to bust out the fisheye lens.

Today was the DePalma show in Costa Mesa California. It was a great event and it was very cool to be a part of it! I’ll have a full blog post in the next day. Thank you to all of our friends and family that came out and supported us and this event. Rest In Peace ~ Adam Yauch/MCA/Nathanial Hörnblowér of the Beastie Boys

In November 1986 I was a couple of months into my senior year of high school when the first major label release from the Beastie Boys hit the store shelves. Licensed to Ill was nothing short of revolutionary to me and my friends. We were fully entranced in the Disco, New Wave and Freestyle scene when the album dropped, so the Beastie Boys and their music was another genre for us to engulf ourselves with. For the rest of the school year and into the following Summer after high school the cassette tape(for those of you too young to remember, a cassette tape predates Compact Disc and MP3 players) was played over and over in my car as well as everyone else’s car and or home. We would drive around and sing along with Beasties. We knew every word to every song on that tape. With that album millons of Beastie Boys fans were born.

The Beastie Boys and their music were refreshing and made myself and many others fans. I’ve bought every album, tee shirts, sticker, hats etc. I’ve been to every Beastie Boys concert in Los Angeles. I was sad when in 2009 they put their tour on hold while MCA aka Adam Yauch battled cancer. I hope for the best but sadly today it was announced that he had passed away.

MCA, Ad-Rock, Mike D and Mix Master Mike have given us great music over the years and great videos as well that were directed by Adam using the pseudonym Nathanial Hörnblowér. In December 2011, the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. What a great tribute to the band, thankfully the induction happened before he passed. Today is a sad day for music and Beastie Boys fans. I will play Licensed to Ill as a tribute to MCA for the rest of the day. Now, where did I leave my cassette player.

On Newsstands ~ Revolucion Magazine

On newsstands now is the premier issue of Revolucion Magazine. This is the newest publication from the Lowrider Magazine group. Stephanie & I have event coverage from last year’s Cinco de Mayo show at the Santa Monica Pier (A couple of the photos from the show are on the cover as well) and I have a “parting shot” of Ralph and his Harley Davidson tattoo at the back of the issue. We have been working on this title for a while now and have a few more features coming out in the next issue. Make sure you pick up a copy and continue to support print media. This is a magazine for us by us and it will only succeed with our support.
